Gap Mountain

It’s been over a month since our last mountain adventure, between Aubrey in school full time, me still working the night shift and adjusting to a new sleep routine/schedule, both of us battling colds, and endless days of rain stopped us from getting out. Monday there was no school, I had the night off, and the weather was nice for mid-fall so we finally had a chance to get out and hike together.

I opted to hike close to home and keep it on the easier side so we headed up Gap Mountain from the Jaffrey side. We were joined with another family from my Hike it Baby Monadnock group. Aubrey had a blast hiking with a friend, they ran sang songs they made up as they went, took turns stopping all the ice flowers they found, which I felt really guilty at times, because no one else could enjoy them, but if they didn’t destroy them, the sun would.

We enjoyed a nice lunch break and Halloween candy treats at the summit and did a little exploring before heading back down. It was a great day for a hike, with good company.

Trail Condition Notes- The one larger water crossing was tricky to navigate, especially for little legs. I really wish The Society for the Protection of NH Forests and Monadnock State Park (the land managers for Gap Mountain Reservation) would add a bridge here. There was some ice near the top, mostly avoidable and traction was not needed as of Monday, but with potential wintery mix weather forecasted for the week, I would anticipate needed at least microspikes here soon.
