We started 2017 just like we started 2016, only better. Last year I hosted a First Day Hike for Hike it Baby Monadnock, but no one showed up, it was cold, overcast and Aubrey and I only did about half the trail we had set off to do. This year, I hosted the same hike again and one other family joined us, so that right there is an improvement. The weather was
perfect, it was high 30s low 40s light wind and blue sunny skies a great day for a winter hike. A volunteer for Society for Protection of New Hampshire Forests offered to guide us out. I am not sure he knew what he was getting into with our group. Two Moms, carrying 30lb+ packs means we are not the fastest hikers, especially in snow covered trails.
This time we made it the entire way out to the Little Mountain Viewpoint on Mount Monadnock, which is a really nice spot. Little Mountain is reached by the Parker Trail, which can be accessed either from the Monadnock State Park Headquarters for a 1.5 mile hike or from the Old Toll Road parking area for a short .3 mile hike. I plan on putting the short distance option on the list for Hike it Baby outings as it is short and has a big view. The hike back down to the HQ was much quicker and we were happily greeted by Park Staff by a warm bonfire, hot cocoa and granola bars.
On to new challenges. This year I have signed us up for the 52 Hike Challenge which I am sure we will complete without an issue since I host at least one hike a week for Hike it Baby, and then we hike on our own a bunch as well. It will just be another motivating force to help keep us outside and active. We are also signed up for the January Hike it Baby 30 Challenge, which sets the goal to hike either 30 miles in January or spend 30 minutes outside 3 times a week. This is our 9th HiB30 Challenge and each one is unique and has helped get us moving. It is very inspiring to see families across the country (and world!) getting out with their children and striving to make nature number one!
